Body Jewelry And School Dress Codes

We all know that experimenting with body jewelry in the fashion world is trendy, but are these fun accessories causing controversy in the student body world? Lately students have been getting into trouble with these items of body jewelry that they consider to be fashionable. Schools are getting the message out that the piercings are inappropriate for class and are beginning to suspend those who sport them.

Some schools around the United States are cracking down on their dress codes, making students wear clothing that will represent the district in a positive way. One district in Detroit, in particular, is forcing their students to wear uniforms consisting of solid khaki, navy blue, or black pants; collared white, blue, black, yellow or pink tops; and closed-toe shoes. A few items prohibited include flip-flops, any sleepwear, hats that aren’t religious headwear, piercings and tattoos, and clothing tight enough to show the abdomen or cleavage.

School boards in America that have been banning things like body jewelry are hoping that by enforcing dress codes, they will keep their student body focused on learning. Some of the parents of these students also have been claiming that the dress codes are a positive influence on the kids. They say the uniforms have been showing a decrease in fights at school.

What about the thoughts of the students? Why aren’t they allowed to express themselves through the beauty of body jewelry? The older kids get, the more they want to stand apart from the crowd. If that’s the case, then why do schools keep prohibiting students from showing their true colors through their clothes and accessories? Although the fact that strict dress codes might be proven to help increase focus on school work, students should still have the right to wear whatever they want.

Body jewelry truly provides people with a variety of styles. There are so many ways to go about getting piercings and the main reason people wear them is because they are a great trend to show off. Students in the United States are the most popular generation of those who wear piercings so anyone can imagine the disappointment that teens are feeling when they aren’t allowed to wear any sort of body jewelry at school.

Once students go to school and find out they aren’t allowed to wear piercings, they are more likely to rebel. This is another strong argument for the students to come back with. For example, if a parent won’t let their child go to a concert, that child is more than likely going to go against the parent and sneak out for the concert. This situation is similar to the prohibited piercings at school in that it shows students could easily go against the dress codes like they would go against their parents’ rules. While strict rules could make a student a more well-behaved person, it could just as easily make them rebel.

School boards in our country are thinking more and more seriously about this situation every day. However, they should take into consideration the ideas of rebellion and restricting teens from expressing themselves. If kids can’t wear body jewelry at school, where can they? School is the one place where kids can show off their style and look different but if uniforms become a definite rule, the freedom is taken from all students.
