The Boom of Indian Kitchenware Industry

Over the last few years, organized retail or large scale retails has witnessed an incessant growth in India. Kitchenware industry has received a major boom in the scenario. It shares the major chunk with other segments in the retail market. The other players in the segment include food and grocery retail segment, apparel retail, jewelery retail, book retail, pharma retail, entertainment retail, accessory retail and so on.

Kitchenware retailing is one such as sector, which has hogged the limelight recently. It was just a couple of year ago that kitchenware was unable to standalone as a major retail sector within the public domain. However, the sector has received a major impetus with increasing disposable income of Indian households. On the other end, the increasing demand of the kitchenware have also attracted big players to make investments in the segment.

In traditional Indian home, kitchenware was more purpose-driven. Aesthetics were never on the list of consideration, while purchasing the kitchenware. An average home constituted of primarily aluminum, steel and copper utensils; cutleries existed in the form of tea-cups, saucers and spoons; plastic bottles and jars existed in blatant form just to serve the purpose of storing spices, sugar, salt and edible oil.

However, Indian kitchenware industry has revamped itself to enter into the new arena. The segment is no more about satisfying the functional needs, but it’s about catering to the diverse needs of the customers – be it style, convenience or budgetary constraints.

The gradual shift in lifestyle of the people have resulted in major changes in the cooking and eating habits. Open kitchens are in vogue today, and demand for fashion driven stainless steel kitchenware and tableware is higher than ever before. Moreover, there have been continuous efforts from the kitchenware manufacturers to reignite the interest of targeted customers. Attractive designs and innovations are constantly introduced in the product range to attract the buyers. Kitchenware gadgets have become more sophisticated and stylish. The mantra of style and convenience has worked, and kitchenware industry has made its way successfully through the hiccups of global recession.

Experts predict that kitchenware market in India is still at its nascent stage, there is a huge scope for market expansion. The housing needs of urban residents have changed greatly, thus providing greater stimulus to the industry. Meanwhile, the vast rural market is yet to up-date itself. This would further help in maintaining steady growth in demand.
