What Every Motorcycle Rider Needs

Well first off to be a biker the first need is a motorcycle, right? Obvious choice, but after that there are many other items that are essential. And that would be the proper gear. Every time you get on that bike the correct gear is a must for your protection.

Let us start with the helmet. Helmets are extremely important. Make sure your helmet is endorsed by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Choose your helmet by how you plan to ride. Are you planning long rides and all year round? If so I would recommend full helmets with a full face visor so you do not need sunglasses or goggles. These items can easily fall off thus, distracting you the driver.

A leather jacket is a must for protection from the cold and also helps to protect you from road rash if you take a spill. If you are planning professional racing you will want to get body armor which acts as a shield for your back, chest and arms. Another item I would recommend is a leather vest. A motorcycle vest can be worn on the warmer days without a jacket and still provide your chest and back with protection. And in cooler weather a leather vest worn under a leather jacket will give you extra warmth as well as an added layer of protection.

Leather chaps and gloves are also important gear for any rider. These items give protection from the cold, winds, as well as help if stones fly up. They will also help provide protection if you take a spill, as they will take the brunt of the damage from road rash. Gloves will also provide a better grip for your hands from slipping off the handle bars.

When it comes to footwear, please do not even consider getting on a motorcycle with sandals. The correct footwear is essential. Leather motorcycle boots will help protect your feet, ankles and the bottom portion of your leg. When choosing boots you should choose them for comfort for long rides as well as mobility for walking.

Now this last gear is not necessarily a necessity but it might be something to consider. That would be leather saddlebags or leather luggage. Now the reason I suggest considering this is it gives you a place to store “your stuff”. This could be wallets, glasses, rain gear. Bringing items back from a store, whatever. You can find a variety of sizes and where you put them on your bike, such as toolbags that attach to the handle bars, bags that attach to a sissy bar or over the fender bags. There is an enormous selection to choose from.

So choose your gear for comfort and protection. And now it’s time ladies and gents to gear up and let’s go riding. Enjoy and be safe.
