The Psychological Preference of Men in Terms of Clothing

Men just like women have dozens of different preferences in terms of clothing and fashion trends. Clothes for both men and women became the acknowledgment of status during the early period of civilization because it reveals their status socially. It has been also used as a form of public display where in the outlook or status of the citizens living in a common society was greatly observed.

Men and women are opposite in different ways and so with their preferences in terms of colors and clothes. Color has a higher affective value for men than women. Almost from the moment of birth, boys are treated as boys and girls as girls. Boys, for example are dressed in blue clothes, covered with blue blankets, and nurtured in a room that lacks the frills and ruffles of a girls’ room. This shows that their preference towards clothing and colors were largely influenced at first by their environment and the orientations given to them such as the beginning of sex-role typing on their early years.

Men are commonly tolerant when it comes to achromatic colors than women. It is because achromatic colors have zero saturation such as black or white and neutral grays. For women clothes with dull colors are less appealing. They often think that it is hard for men to notice them if they pick such color principle. It is because women are more color-conscious than men. It makes them more divert and flexible in terms of fashion trends. They also prefer tints than of shades. Smooth and plain colors however are the common choice of colors for men.

Psychologically men prefer to use cool colors to be the color of their clothes because they wanted to obtain the image of serenity and calmness. Opposite from the views of women, men are highly influenced with the representation of being unnoticed. They tend to live a simple and breezy life because they are more prone to engage in activities where their physical body and strengths are very much challenged. They frequently choose clothes that could hide the inner condition of their body such as excessive sweating and signs of body odor.

The type of clothes that men usually desire depends on their occupation and interest. Men who work in the office are generally expected to wear formal suits and executive attires. Meanwhile men who are engaged in outdoor activities such as traveling, are often seen with their casual or informal attires because it is capable of giving them the comfort they basically need on their work.

Age is also a factor for men when they choose the type of clothes they are going to use. Teen and professional men differ markedly on their interests and hobbies and so with the clothes they use. Religion is also part of the considerations for men when they are asked to select their clothes. It is mandatory for them to show their respect towards their religion. It is because there are some religions that prohibit their members to use clothes which are not approved by their own belief and principle.
